We already know that Obsidian Entertainment is working on Avowed and Outer Worlds 2. However, a job listing on their official website has given evidence to the possibility that they’re also developing a third game. Avowed and Outer Worlds 2, for reference, are being developed in Unreal Engine 5.
This job opening instead asks for someone experienced in using the Unity Engine. The Unity Engine is the same engine that the studio used in their three isometric RPGs, the two Pillars of Eternity games and Tyranny. Obsidian using Unity again might mean that they’re making another isometric game, possibly a third Pillars of Eternity game.
While Avowed already takes place in the Pillars of Eternity universe, it will be a first-person action RPG, rather than the turn-based ones that Pillars of Eternity got its start on. The game might, however, also be a sequel to Tyranny, considering that game ended on a cliffhanger.
However, the game could also be something entirely new in terms of gaming. It could be a whole new RPG in a whole new IP, or some kind of Diablo or Torchlight-esque dungeon crawling action game. It could even not be isometric at all, and be a new kind of game. It might not even be an RPG.
While Obsidian these days is best known for Pillars of Eternity and other games, they’ve made a huge number of other games in various other genres as well. They made Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords, Fallout: New Vegas, the original Halo Wars game, and more.
This game being developed in Unity could therefore be one of many different genres, so right now it’s too early to speculate whether or not we’ll be getting a new Pillars of Eternity or Tyranny game, or if we’ll be getting something else.
