And if you are facing any issues related to controller or want to skip intros, you can check our guides on those topics too.
Rename the Movies Folder
This may seem like a strange way to fix your crashing issues, but it seems to be working for several people on the Steam forums of Days Gone, so it’s worth giving it a shot.
What you need to do is find the ‘Movies’ folder in the game’s directory and rename it to ‘Movies_2’.
After doing so, start the game until you reach the menu. Once you do, close the game and rename the folder back to ‘Movies’ (its original name).
Now, launch Days Gone and it should hopefully stop crashing for you.
Install Microsoft Visual C++
If Days Gone gives you messages like “vcruntime140_1.dll missing” or “MSVCP140.dll was not found” when it crashes, you can re-install Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable to fix this issue.
To install it, visit this website.
Update your GPU Drivers
Any time you experience any sort of crashing issues or black screens with games like Days Gone, the first thing you need to do is to update your graphics card drivers.
Whenever a big release like Days Gone comes out, NVIDIA and AMD release new drivers that optimize your GPU to make the game run smoothly on your PC.
To update your GPU drivers, you’ll need to first find out what GPU you have in your PC. To find that out, press the Windows key on your keyboard, type dxdiag and press enter.
Click on the ‘Display’ tab on top and you’ll see the name of your GPU. Go to the official manufacturer’s website and download the relevant drivers.
Verify the Integrity of Game Files
While you were downloading Days Gone on your PC, some of its files may have been corrupted or not even downloaded at all, which could be causing your game to crash.
To rectify this, you can verify the integrity of the game files of Days Gone. What this does is scan all the game files and re-download the ones that are corrupted or missing.
If you have the game on Steam, you can verify the integrity of game files by following these steps:
- Open up Steam and go to your library.
- Right Click on Days Gone and select Properties.
- In this window, click on the Local Files tab to the left.
- Select ‘Verify integrity of game files’.
This will take a few minutes to complete. Once it’s done, launch the game and see if it’s still crashing or not.
If you have the game on the Epic Store, you can verify the integrity of game files by following these steps:
- Open up the Epic Games Launcher and go to your Library.
- Find Days Gone and click the three dots (…) adjacent to the launch icon for the game.
- Click on ‘Verify’.
After it’s done verifying, restart the Epic Games launcher and then start the game.
Disable All Overlays
Often times, the Overlays you have running in the background cause issues with your games which leads to crashing and/or black screens.
If Days Gone keeps crashing for you, make sure to disable all Overlays before launching the game. This includes, the NVIDIA, AMD, Steam, Discord overlays. You can go to the settings of each individual app and turn off its overlay from there.
Launch the Game in Windowed Mode
When you’re running a game like Days Gone in fullscreen mode, the game has full reign over the screen output which may be too stressful for your hardware, resulting in crashes.
You can launch Days Gone in windowed mode by following these steps:
- Open Steam and go to your Library.
- Right click on Days Gone and click on ‘Properties’.
- In this window, click on the empty bar below ‘Launch Options’.
- Type -windowed and -noborder in this text field and press OK.
Now, when you launch the game, it’ll start in windowed mode, which could potentially stop it from crashing.
If you still get a black screen, you can also try Alt-Tab’ing in and out of the game. When you press Alt and Tab at the same time on your keyboard, it’ll minimize your game and open up the other application you have open on your PC.
If you don’t have any other applications open, it’ll just minimize the game and take you to the desktop.
After doing that, you can press Alt and Tab once again to go back into the game. This will hopefully fix the black screen issue.
