Playstation has hinted at a possible hardware reveal or an addition to the PS5 in 2023. In an interview with Famitsu, Senior Vice President, Platform Experience Hideaki Nishino suggested that 2023 might be an “important time for the platform” and that “you will look forward to next year (2023) as well”.
He was speaking about the future of the PS5 platform commenting that the cumulative sales would have exceeded 37 million units by the end of fiscal year 2022. Nishino did not elaborate further on what kind of hardware or addition can be revealed in the coming year, he did say “we will be able to see the results of the preparations we have been making since last year so that we can deliver it to customers who wanted to buy a PS5″.
He also spoke at length regarding the release of the PS VR2 on February 22nd, 2023, saying that they had received positive feedback regarding its upcoming release. He added that it is being produced by a different team than the PS5 but was designed together.
Nisihino said that it will make use of the full use of the power of the PS5. He went on to say that many titles have been announced in the coming year and that they will prepare a “wealth of content” for the PS5 itself which, he assures, will be in adequate supply for purchase. He was commenting on the PS5 shortages caused by semi-conducter shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic as supply lines were closed due to lockdowns.
As for the new hardware, Playstation may release slimmer models with a detachable disk drive in the coming year as rumored before. Nothing has been confirmed or hinted in that regard, but it has been argued that if past trends are to be believed, then this would be the likely course of action.
