Knights Of The Old Republic Remake Using Unreal Engine?

One of the big surprises of the Playstation Showcase earlier this month was the reveal that Aspyr Media were in the process of developing a Knights of the Old Republic remake, revamping a classic RPG that fans have been clamoring for a remake for for years. It might even be in Unreal Engine.

This information comes from the LinkedIn page of Daniel Hayden, currently working for Aspyr Media as the game’s Lead Cinematic Designer. The description of his current job didn’t actually name that the Knights of the Old Republic remake was what he was working on, but he did mention Unreal Engine as a part of the project.

Considering the popularity of Knights of the Old Republic, even almost 20 years after it originally released, it stands to reason that Aspyr Media would want to make the game look as good as possible, both in terms of gameplay and its cinematics. With how good Unreal Engine 5 has looked as Epic Games has shown it off, the Knights of the Old Republic remake would hopefully look just as good if it’s on that iteration.

If the rumor is true, this would be the second Star Wars game in recent memory to run on Unreal Engine, after Respawn Entertainment developed Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order back in 2019. That game came out looking great on Unreal Engine 4, so even if the KOTOR remake doesn’t run on Unreal Engine 5, it and its cutscenes will hopefully still look good.

We don’t have an actual release date on the Knights of the Old Republic remake yet, but we do know that it will be releasing on the Playstation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch when it does release. Hopefully at future Playstation shows we’ll be able to see some of these cinematics in action, but until then all we can do is wait and hope.
